Motor Dies

115 Merc on my Carlson boat an

115 Merc on my Carlson boat and when I goto put into gear it tries to die. When neutral or giving it gas the motor runs fine. I brought the boat from Salt Lake area to an altitude of around 7500 feet or so. Not sure if it just needs jetted or if the cables need adjustment. Any thoughts would be great.

"carb jets are plugged with old gas, no gas through 1 or more carbs means no oil to those clys. DONT RUN IT. They all sound good in neutral with no load."

"Brian, most problems are fuel

"Brian, most problems are fuel related, but lets do the basic test first. Compression, spark and then work the fuel system. Compression first so we don't waste time and money working on a dead engine that never will be right. Spark test with a timing light on each plug wire while running, look for flash.
Do not run the engine above idle with a known problem.
If one of the carbs has a plugged jet that cyl or cyl's is not getting gas or OIL. It will toast the engine if it hasn't already. Thats why we do the compression test.
If all checks good then start by checking the fuel tank vent is open. Next pump the bulb with the engine off and check each carb by looking through it. No fuel should be dripping.
Next pump the bulb with the engine running, if it helps its the fuel supply, (tank, pick-up or fuel pump).
As I said, its best not to run it. It would be better to remove and clean the carbs if the spark and compression checks ok.
Start a new post after you check it."
