i have a 2002 mercury 60h outboard, i recently replaced the water pump impeller and gaskets and shaft seal, it ran for about 5 minutes with muffs on, i shut it off then restarted it, it now runs then dies it acts like the water is not releasing and choking the motor, when it dies it bangs pretty hard, i pulled the lower unit off again, the shaft seal was pushed up the shaft, i made sure it was on the second time, it now still does it, i pulled the lower unit again, the seal is still installed properly, while it is running the water is being sucked in fine but looks like its not exhausting it very well, can the motor be getting choked out by water somehow? any suggestions?

Re: motor dies

No, the water never gets anywhere that it could kill the motor - at least not if everything else is ok.

When the motor dies, pull all 3 sparkplugs and see if you have water in the cylinder(s).

If so, you have a gasket gone that has nothing to do with the waterpump. On this particular model it would be the powerhead base gasket that could cause water to get in to the cylinders.

This model does not have a "head", so no head gasket to go which means there is very limited places water could accidently get in...
