"Ok, no spark when it quit, how about a couple hours later? still no spark?
Obviously time to troubleshoot the ignition.
I would rule out the stator, it has 6 windings and each winding individually feeds a respective (coil) for each cylinder.
So either all 6 bobbins died at the same time or all 6 cdm died at the same time or the issue is elsewhere.
And you did not mention getting a horn or warning lights when the motor died which happens on this model when just about anything gives up.
Because of that, my guess would be the ECM - the alarms originate from it, so if it's shot it would explain the lack of spark and the lack of warning horn or lights.
The 96 model has a hook up that can be plugged into a DDT (test computer), so I would take it to Merc and have it tested."
