I have access to a '77? Ford 351 engine with OMC electric shift outdrive. Owner says was running very well until he hit a stump hard enough to tear the lower unit from the upper gear case. A part of the lower end of the upper gear case was torn off. Is there any chance the engine is still useable?

Ya,... The motor, Might be Ok,...

Only a tear-down, 'n look/ see can tell for sure....
 
friend of mine's dad did that with his 140 OMC stringer (mech shift).... 30 mph into a rock

towed 3 miles in with the drive still hanging by the shift cable :)

engine was fine... everything behind the engine was scrap.
 
I would finish taking the upper drive off, pull the ball gear and shaft out of the intermediate housing if it looks bent or damaged and hook water up to the engine and see if it starts.
