"motor seems to idle fine, but as I accelerate it cut on and off only for a split second. It will do it multiple times. If I ease into the throttle I can get it not to do it. Any ideas?

"carb check is a good start as jwb suggested. Mine was doing the same thing and I had to look at my electronic advance/timing when throttling it up fast! It would surge into top speed and plane really easy one time, and then dog down and lose power at other times! It had to do with timing and throttle position......have it tuned by someone who knows what they're doing. It will save a lot of headache....."

Check what each idle screw is

Check what each idle screw is set to prior to stripping and cleaning and set them back where they were if the motor ran ok befor the problem started.

There are two brass flat blade screw caps on each carby and under them is the idle and intermediate discharge hole make sure they are clean. If you have problems unduing the screws give them a tap and they loosen.

"If that "cut on. cut off&

"If that "cut on. cut off" is a very sharp instantenous action, suspect ignition. I've found this problem to exist when any moving wire (timer base usually) is frayed, broken, etc, shorting to any powerhead ground.
