"Have you ever noticed the water rushing towards the transom of a boat as you slow down? Should it somehow get up at the powerhead, it would create a problem to say the least.

If you intend to not use the hood in order to trouble shoot some problem, that is understandable, but be careful of the flywheel.

If you have another reason other than a lost hood, what is it?"

"Hi Bill,

with my limited experience, I would take a semi-educated guess that it shouldn't harm the engine, taking into account the following factors:

- risk of getting dirt or other debris sucked into the carb if it doesn't have an intake screen/funnel installed

- added potential for corrosion and/or electrical trouble if you have salt water splashing on the insides of the engine

- risk of spark plugs shorting out if your leads are badly insulated and you get rain or splashwater on the plug leads.

Also, running with the cowl off might affect your carb settings due to the stronger airflow. At least on my 15hp Merc, I notice that when I adjust the idle speed, it tends to drop 50 to 100 RPM when I stick the cowl back on.

But is there a particular reason why you would want to run without the cowl, since I presume the engine is designed to operate with one?

Forum gurus, please advise/correct as required...

(EDIT: Hehe, simul-post with Joe above. Very good point about the wake..)"
