Motor Boubces Up & Down in Reverse

I purchased a used Pontoon several years ago with a '87 60hp Mercury. At the the time the trim tilt/trim were not electrically operational and a piece of allthread was used to keep the motor in place ata a specific angle of sorts. I decided to fix the elecrtrical system by installing a three position switch for up off down. The trim/tilt work but I noticed when I put the pontoon in reverse the motor bounces up and down. It did not bounce with the all thread rod in place previously. I tool the pontoon out of the water and checked out the tilt/trim system. I noticed even though the trim was down, I was able to lift the motor by hand quite a bit. I then raised the motor all the way and was able to push the motor down quite a bit but not all the way. A replacement unit sell for $1200 however it is an upgrade i.e. they no longter sell the older complete system. I am considering rebuilding the tilt and trim cylinders. Any problems or gotcha's I need to be aware of? Any other thoughts?

It sounds like you have air in your hydraulic system.... check your fluid level, top up if necessary while the engine is in the full up position.
Cycle the unit up and down a few times and also check/top up the level each time you go up....
This process bleeds the system and once its done, your engine shouldnt bounce anymore....

Isnt there a reverse lock mechanism to stop the engine flying out of the water in reverse. Maybe this is not engaging properly. Not sure exactly how it engages but would suggest this may also be an issue

The reverse lock mechanism is not necessary on the tilt/trim motor, the pressure of the hydraulics will lock it in place. I would say that you have air, you are low on hydraulic fluid, or your tilt cylinder needs to be rebuilt. When working properly, you cannot force the motor to move against the hydraulics.
