Model E30RL COA How do you release bottom leg from engine to replace impeller?

Am unable to release the bottom leg from the engine to replace the impeller evinrude 30hp 1985 model, help please

Remove the black / plastic water intake screens.----There you will find shift rod connecter.----Undo the nuts.-----Now slide the upper nut up towards powerhead.------Now remove the wee black plastic keeper.----Lower unit now comes off.-----The wee plastic keeper is split and it is expensive.
