model and year question

The other day my brother brought me a boat from Georgia to Alabama. He got it from his brother in-law from Savannah. He says it is a 2004 Islander boat with a 40 HP two stroke Mercury. I have checked that boat all over and I can find no model or serial number anywhere on the motor or boat. There is a few numbers I have found that may help to identify what this boat and motor is. On the transom mount for the motor there is a stamped number of 1996. On the boat there is what appears to be a model number of MFM 15713G596, stamped into the fiberglass and gel coat. Can anyone help me verify what model this motor is and help verify that it is a 1996 boat and motor. Honestly I think his brother in-law may have bought a used stolen boat with numbers removed. But it is registered to my brother now but as a 2004. Thanks.

Maybe posting a photo might help one of us recognize something for the 1996 stamp on the engine. Being a 1996 or newer Mercury engine, typically you'll find a serial number that resembles a number such as 0G290585 for example. The beginning number 0 might not be there (stamped in) while it might be there too. Newer engine models such as 2006ish + might start with a 1B, etc. etc..
Here are two general places to look on the engine but as long as no one removed the engine welch plugs (freezes plugs) on the power head, the serial number should/may still be there somewhere on the engine typically a bit harder to find than the next image in the following link portrays .... https://www.perfprotech.com/blog/ma...ry-marine-outboard-motor-serial-number-number

Being the last two number are 96, makes the boat a 1996 model year.

Here's another website to use,
Find the history on this 1996 MOLDED FIBERGLASS INDUSTRIES* and buy with confidence.
Manufacturer: *MOLDED FIBERGLASS INDUSTRIES*

The first three characters of the HIN designate the manufacturer of the boat.

The first three characters of the HIN you have entered, MFM, designate MOLDED FIBERGLASS INDUSTRIES as the manufacturer.

However, the following manufacturers also share this three letter code:
◦MARK FOUR MOLDERS (OOB)
Important: This will not affect your history report! Your HIN is unique and applies only to your exact boat. Therefore, the information provided in your BoatHistoryReport.com report applies only to your specific boat.

Once you find the engine serial number, you could try running the number here for stolen but don't expect to honestly find anything as most law enforcement agencies don't take the time to input any info like one would hope once their stuff goes missing. http://stolen-outboards.net/en/

Hope this helps some, good luck with it and welcome to boating.
