There is two different Mariner lines both of which were (owned) and sold by Mercury.

The 100% Yamaha built Mariners were built under agreement with Merc's parent company. They were simply Yamaha models with different paint and decals. They were usually marketed after Yamaha had stopped producing the model themselves (but not always).

The Mercury/Mariners were simply Merc models with different paint and decals. I see you are in the UK. Mariner was just plain "popular" over there so much of the "Merc" line was decorated as a Mariner.

In the 40 horse models, which were produced as both Yami/Mariners and Merc/Mariners, in both cases twin cylinder models existed. Every Yami/Mariner 40 horse produced was a twin cylinder. Some of the Merc/Mariners produced were twin cylinders.

If you have a Yami produced model you age estimation is off a bit. The last 40 horse Yami/Mariner was built for the 1992 model year.

If you have original pictures of the cowl (hood) and can post them one quick look will help determine "who" built the motor.

Sometimes motors are far older than you think. There was three different models of the Yami/Mariner 40 horse and parts are not the same between models. So if you have one of these pinning down "exactly" what you have is of utmost importance.

If your motor is really newer than 1992, then it absolutely must be a Merc/Mariner.

Pics could really help.

thanks for that much info ,i do not have a picture at mo but it has a grey hood with the very narrow red line ,and i forgot to mention it but it is electric start with a recoil start as well which is very handy when the battery runs down which it did when i was out fishing for nine hours with the radio and instrument left on .i have just been onto the mercury decal ident site and it is the hood dated 1990 if this is any help ,
