Mixture air ratio

I have a 40ELPTO Mercury outboard 2001. II made the mistake of trying to adjust the idle of the engine and now it will not start. I have always suspected the electric choke wasn't working correctly. So I TS that and found that it wasn't working. I have corrected that issue. Next i referred to the MM for timing fuel mixture adjustment. I made the adjustments per the manual and got the engine running for a minute or so. Then it died. Got it running again for two minutes, gave it some throttle and it bogged down. Adjusted the mixture screw on the carb a quarter turn like the manual says to do and haven't been able to get it to run since. I have verified spark, replaced the plugs, the only thing I havent done is taken the carb apart. Any ideas?

What were the symptoms of motor before you messed it up? A little prior history might help

Before the engine ran good except it was always really hard to start. I have owned the boat for about a year. To get it started i would have to advance the throttle and crank and crank for a least 2-3 minutes to get it to start and once it would start it would idle very low until ir warmed up, then it would run good. So I took a look at the MM and decided that maybe the electric choke wasn't working. I think the key is supposed to push in at the start position or is it just at the ACC position because my ignition switch only pushes in at the off position which doesn't make sense to me. So yesterday I found the choke not getting power no matter what position the key is in, pushed or not, so i moved the choke wire to activate when the key is in the ACC position, I dont think this is correct but the choke is working now. So i probably need to replace the switch or add a momentary push button for the choke. That is the history before I adjusted the idle and could not get it to run again.

Usually the choke is activated by pushing in key,if solenoid"choke" is not getting power, the key switch is where the power comes from, test key switch! Solenoid should be energized in the on position, not acc. or start"cranking" position on key.
