Mixed Gas for 4-stroke?

My dealer, where I just purchased a new 5 HP 4-stroke Mercury, told me to use 50:1 mixed gas for the first tank (3 gal).
The manual doesn't say to do this. Any thoughts from other new Merc owners? Thanks!! RB
