"i took my 87 bayliner capri with a 2.3 liter for its first voyage yesterday and i have a couple of small problems that need some attention. the boat will get up on plane but it seams to take forever for it to do it. the motor just don't fell like it has any power. when I take it past 3/4 throttle the motor bogs down and looses rpm's there is a miss in the engine that really becomes aparent at upper speeds. I have tuned the boat up replaced fuel filter, plugs wires cap rotor points etc. I am ordering a carb kit for it today other than the flapper in the exhaust and fuel pressure any other ideals on what to check. compression is good on all cylinders. fuel was fresh. also another problem I was haveing is that the gauges did not work properly. the engine temp gauge pegged at over 250. I checked the engine with a temp gun and the temp was only 160. the tach, speedometer and voltage guage did not work at all. I am getting 14 volts at battery while running so the alt is charging any suggestions are greatly appreated thanks in advance. Michael"

Sound like you need to rebuild

Sound like you need to rebuild and clean the carb.
THe temp gauge being pegged means there's an issue like the sensor wire being grounded or a really bad sensor. You said compression is good but what is it? 110-120 120-130 130-140 80-110 ?

"unfrienldly animals under the dash ? doubt the gauges are the problem, could be one gauge causing the problem, as the power wires and grounds are interconnected."

lowest cylinder was about 115

lowest cylinder was about 115 highest was about 130 with only a 15 pound differeance between cylinders the engine should be in fairly good shape. the boat never came up to full rpm's I believe that the 2.3 W.O.T rpm's should be around 5500 without the tach working it is hard to say what the engine was turning when I took it out yesterday. To me it sounded like it never came above 3500 rpm's. If it stops raining tady I will put on some welding gloves and feel around in the dash for critter's

I finally found the time to rebuild the carb and put everything back together. went to the lake sunday for another test trail. the boat comes up to plane faster and has more power. With my family and the normal gear that we take we are approx. 850 pounds. that is just the six of us a tube and a cooler with drinks and lunch in it. Am I expicting to much from this 2.3 liter engine. We had other troubles with the boat and I was not able to see what the max RPM's I was turning. any other suggestions on what can be done or do I need to go and by a boat with a bigger engine. thanks again Michael

"You don't say what length

"You don't say what length or weight the boat is but in my opinion Bayliners from that vintage tended to be a little bit on the underpowered side. They did this to keep the cost down and therefore make the boating experience available to more people, nothing wrong with that as long as your expectations are not to do 50 mph in 3 secs. I would say if you can take out 6 people and some gear and still do some tubing you are doing pretty good!"

"the boat is a 17 foot in length, and weighs about 1800 pounds I am compairing it to another 17 foot bayliner with a 3.0 and mine just don't feel as powerful. does anyone know what the cam specs. are for the 2.3? the motor has been changed and I am wondering if an automotive engine has been put in the boat."

those are the same specs as the 2.3l found in same year automotive engines. so i guess that there is no difference in marine or automotive cams in this engine. guess i will have to try something else to get better performance. thank you Mr. Hill and Mr.Brackett for your help.
