Misfiring 1983 Suzuki DT75

Went to take my boat out this

Went to take my boat out this morning. It has been about 2wks since last outing. Motor wouldn't seem to open up and then started to pop and spudder so I limped her back to the dock. I filled up just before going out so I though I might have bad gas and when I pulled the sediment bowl I found shredded rubber probably from deteriorating fuel hose somewhere. Cleaned it out and tried it again but no change. Pulled plugs and checked compression #1-170lbs. #2-164lbs. #3-155lbs. Number 3 seemed kinda fouled and between the annode and case of the spark plug I found a very small ball of steel. Don't know where it could have come from... Casting flash from head? BB from welding repair of some sort in it's previous life who knows? I'm going to replace this plug and try it again tomorrow but is sure acts like ignition problem. Anyone here have any suggestions? Trouble shooting tips? I know alot about automotive engines but this is new so...

"Robert, the bit of metal is troubling. You may have chewed a piston ring. I would be very careful before trying to fire it up again.

For the cost of a head gasket you might be better off pulling the head and taking a look."
 
The bit of metal was round lik

The bit of metal was round like a ball bearing. A chewed piston ring would be fragmented and in order for it to get in the combustion chamber (in my opinion) would require a broken piston and a decent loss of compression. I bore scoped the cyl. wall and didn't see any obvious damage.
 
A sure sign of internal engine

A sure sign of internal engine damage!! Possibly a wrist pin bearing or crank pin bearing ( both are needle / roller bearings ).But hey you could be lucky.Given the history of the parent company on parts and service it is my bet that soon you will be looking for another motor.Let us know what you find.
