"Have two 1988 454's. Suck

"Have two 1988 454's. Sucked in some sand in the port engine and it began steaming and developed a synchronized "Thump" at idle. The outside port exhaust takes more time to show water when started. Cleaned strainer, changed the water pump, opened manifold ports to remove sand. Steam problem improved, no change change to time needed for water to show in exhaust and I still have an occassional "syncronized" thump in the engine at idle. Any ideas?"

The thump could simply be a ro

The thump could simply be a rough idle that's being transmitted through the trans adapter clutch plate.

The overheating MIGHT be causd by sand in the riser's water outlet. There's usually a series of small holes where the water and exhaust meet. I suggest pulling that riser off and rodding it out with coat hanger wire stuck in drill motor. Then flush with a water hose.

"I do not have an overheating

"I do not have an overheating problem which I confirmed with an external sensing temperature gun. My biggest concern is this thump which is strong and sounds like cavitation. The engine is at idle, water is flowing through the exhausts at a good rate and the thump developes after stating the engine. Once I increase the rpm, it disappears. This is mainly heard when the engine is first started and before warm up."

"Sounds like possibly a coupler. Is it possible that while you were sucking up that sand, the prop was plowing it? Get an automotive stethascope and listen for the source of the sound and don't be suprised if it is coming from the bell housing.
