1989 Mariner 2 stroke 40 hp(yamaha built)first run of the year--it was stored outside through a Canadian winter --it ran like crap --bogging--stalling at idle--made trolling impossible--made it home--took the plugs out and there is a milky grey liquid on the plugs--i figure maybe bad tank of fuel so i replace the fuel and install new plugs--next trip out the thing runs perfectly all day--as smooth at idle as is expected with this motor--starts right up --top speed seems to be there no problem--compression shows 120 psi both cylinders---i take the plugs out out of curiosity and the grey milky crap is there
before i take this old girl to the questionable local shop does anyone have any suggestions

Do a better compression test.Remove both plugs.Check comp. Then spray some WD or oil in the cylinders.test again.Post the results.
I had a motor with 145# comp on all three and it still had a blown head gasket.
It's possible the motor had water in it and froze the water jacket and water is getting back through the exhaust.J

hey Dockside--If I have this thing on cuffs idling and it is peeing it should be at operating temp, right?--so i shouldn't be able to put my hand on the heads--right?
I'll try it tomm. in the driveway
JJ05--I'll try another compression test as you suggested and see what takes place
as far as ethanol goes they just started adding it to the fuel in these parts about a month ago and I am running hi test fuel which they say has no ethanol

You should be able to put your hands on the heads without it being uncomfortable for at least 7-10 seconds.

I decided to push ahead with exaust cover gaskets--got er all disassembled and lucked out getting all the bolts out without breaking any--- waiting for the gaskets from the dealer--will post if this cures the dreaded milky plugs

well back to the saga--reinstalled the exaust cover----everything went fine--fired er up on the cuffs--seems ok--i decide to let er come up to operating temp----no go idled on cuffs for 20 minutes--head still as cold as a witches tit--so i decide to check the thermostat--THERE IS NO DAMN THERMOSTAT--WHAT THE HELL?--could this be some kind of a hillbilly /gerry rig fix from the previous owner?--i mean it runs nice and cool--too damn cool--the spring on the water pressure release valve is missing too

yup--I believe you nailed the problem right off the the bat--I appreciate the help by the way--going to order the parts--is a thermostat around 50 bucks?--thats the price i'm seeing online--again thanks for the help
