I'm getting milky gear oil

I'm getting milky gear oil in the leg...just seals?

Have the drain plug gaskets but what else and is there anyone there who can tell me what seals/gaskets to replace?

"Thats for sure a leaky seal.

"Thats for sure a leaky seal. It could be any one of several different seals.
Could be shift shaft, prop shaft, upper or lower drive shaft, or the drain plug.
If your drive is 10 or 15 years old it likely needs to be completely dissassembled and resealed.

You need to drain the leg and pressure test it to be sure what's leaking.
I am guessing your drive does not have a lube oil monitor bottle. Alpha Gen II's and later have the lube oil monitor standard. It can be added to any earlier drive. Suggest you buy the kit and install it. This will usually save water intrusion in the future.

What is a lube oil monitor bot

What is a lube oil monitor bottle and what does it look like? I have an alpha I gen II and I'M SURE I don't have one. Should I?

Thanks for the info...any good

Thanks for the info...any good resources online for schematics? I have an 1981 Mercruiser 228 (305 Chevy).

No it does not have a monitor...good suggestion.

The monitor bottl

"What year?
The monitor bottle is usually a milky white plastic squarish thing mounted front port side on V-8's or rear port side on V-6's, or maybe on the inner transom. It's about 5" high, has a black plastic screw cap on the top, and a 1/4" rubber hose off the bottom which goes to the inner transom plate. It should have a level of dark greenish drive lube oil.

It would be odd if your Gen II did not have this, as all Gen II's are plumbed for it from the factory, and as far as I know the monitor assembly comes standard with the power package. What year is it?

My boat is a Celebrity 200 199

My boat is a Celebrity 200 1991 with Alpha I Gen II. thanks for the info. I am pretty sure its not there as I have just changed the trim sensors and wiring through the transom and also serviced the engine. Does it keep the drive leg topped up then? The drive leg on my boat has bottom oil drain plug(obviously) a level plug and another on top with a dip stick. Don't know if this makes a difference.

Good idea to get a kit like the one Guy referenced.
The beauty of it is that the reservoir bottle is higher than the water outside the drive, so the lube oil is higher in pressure, and the water wont leak in if you have a leaky seal. Lube oil will leak out a little, but water will not get in.
There is also a low level switch on the bottle which is wired into your alarm circuit, so if the level gets low, you get an alarm.

The link to ebay does'nt seem to work as it says the seller is away. Any other referance or diagram of one would be greatly appreciated as I want one now. Sounds like a great idea. Can they be bought new?

"They are available from Merc

"They are available from Merc or other dealers.
Check the link that Guy attached.
You can check this site, or do a Google search for Merc drive lube oil monitor, and that should find several places to order one.
