Does any one know if the mid section can be removed while the motor is attached to the bracket in order to inspect / replace the exhaust manifold and muffler gaskets. If so are there any tricks to remove ?? I know the bottom gear case has to be dropped typical of water pump service.

Thanks in advance Captain Charles

PS: I want to do this without removing the power head if at all possible.

Not sure what you are trying to do here.-----------The powerhead is bolted to the exhaust housing ( often called the midsection )----------I do think that you need to refer to a proper manual on this job.

Thanks I have 2 proper manuals ie. Yam service manaul 68F-28197-Z9-11 and LIT-18616-02-82 neither answers the question. Please reread the post

Are you saying that the powerhead must be removed 1st to then get the midsection off in order to find an exhaust leak ?????? Thanks again for any helpful info.

Post the part # of the gaskets you intend to inspect / replace !!----Only that will tell me for sure what you are working on / trying to do !

I am 99.99 % certain that the powerhead needs to come off.----I do not believe that part # 28 will pull out the bottom or that you can get a wrench up there.-------What about scraping gasket surface up there ?-----------Pull the lower unit off and see for yourself.

In the process of pulling Powerhead now. Have all the bolts out as shown in service manual, think it hung on the dowel pins or gasket glue???????

Moving forward THANKS

PS The lower unit is off

if all of the bolts are removed and the nuts are off the studs, which are in the front on either side of the steering are try putting some pressure on your lifting device and shaking the engine, you are probably correct on the dowel pins being hung up. remember that you must pick the powerhead strait up or else he drive shatf will bing and cause the powerhead not to release. Also remember to make sure the shifting mechanisim is not bolte to the engine block still. hope this helps.

Zackfactor You are correct....I also think that the bond of the gasket was holding it just enough that I didnt wand to pry. But I put the bar to it and it popped. The book doesn't call out any gasket goo but it sure acted as thought it was coated with something.
Maybe it was since this is a warrenty powerhead installed back in 01.

Thanks for the help.......will post the findings of the origional post Rising Exhaust Smoke
