Mid 90's 25 hp Merc won't start

I'm looking at purchasing a mid 90's 25 hp outboard. It was unable to start but the pistons have the proper compression, there is spark and it seems that the carbs are getting fuel. It hasn't been used for a few years but seems to be in good shape. What could be the issue? Can I put gas straight into the piston to by pass the carbs incase this is the issue. Thanks
 
If the plugs are dry,no fuel getting through the carbs,they are probably clogged up and need cleaning so a squirt of gas into the piston will only give you a couple of seconds.Suggest you spray a little fogging oil in if you are trying to start it dry,might be a little smoky when she does start but at least the cyls will have a little lubrication
 
The 25 horse 2 stroke is a very fine engine - especially mid 90's. If you are happy with the compression and you are certain it has spark, then unless the price is way out to lunch I would definitely pick it up.

Since it won't start I would expect the price to be somewhat under the $1000 range. A complete carb kit for these runs about 75 bucks (and takes an hour or two of your time if you are mechanically inclined). If you need a shop to do it, count on about 300 bucks. Likewise, if it's been sitting, a waterpump kit is probably in order as well - again, 75 bucks (kit), 300 if you need a shop to do it.

That's why I said - depending on the price - if you are going to have to drop 600 bucks to get her in "usable" condition then I wouldn't pay more than 500 or 600 bucks for her....

The price has already been negotiated at $750 but they will not sell it until I get back to them.
I may try to work something out to see if I could have a marine mechanic look at it before I give them any cash.

It maybe a bit tough to spray and crank since the motor doesn't have electric start.
If I can get this to start with spraying fuel in the piston, I plan to have it serviced.
 
Try this: Buy a can of carb cleaner. Using the plastic tube that comes with it, shoot a 4 second shot into the carb opening (carb/ throttle wide open). Then crank it.
