"I am hoping someone here can help us. I have a friend that has a mid 80's Evinrude 75 on a 15 Whaler. The problems are that the engine wont idle normally. The idle has to be pushed up really high to get it to idle at all. Also the owner says that beyond half throttle the engine begins to lose power. I have not been for a ride in the boat yet, but will probably get to go check it out on Monday.
Here is what I have checked so far... Compression check: 120 top, 110 middle, 118 bottom. Checked for spark in all 3 holes, good spark with new plugs.
I have not had any time to check basic things yet but it already looks like a fuel problem to me. I found that the choke rod swings freely with no spring to "hold the butterflys open". The choke solenoid pulls rods closed but when released, the rods swing freely. Is it possible that the chokes are closing when he pushes the throttles forward?
Is there anything else it could be? IE: failing power pack, timing-stator problem, fuel pump, etc... Owner states that the carbs have been rebuilt numerous times and that no one could ever get it perfect."
