"One of the factory elbow gaskets is leaking. I purchased new ones(haven't pulled the old ones off yet). THE NEW ONES ARE METAL. Need experienced advice. I've had Mercruisers for 23yrs. Always very good luck with the fiber type gaskets and Permatex Form-a-Gasket to keep the water off the metal. I've seen metal types start corroding under the edges of the gaskets from salt water(and they say NO gasket sealer on these). Should I try to find an older fiber gasket? Maybe use the Form a Gasket on the metal gasket also even though they say not to. Also I've heard Loctite 518 is a very tough bonding rubberish sealer? I hate to go back with the metal, that is what is leaking now. Thanks."

"Yes Mr Pescador, item 10 is correct. All I've seen is the fiber type, but never had a 5.7L until now. Others were 4 or 6 cyl. We do run in salt water often down here.

If you've never experienced salt water, most people do not even comprehend the extreme corrosion that can occur. It will get to and corrode things that are no problem in fresh water. I do flush it religiously which is why I have as few problems as I have."

"I suppose if everything is perfect on the surfaces, that helps. But with salt water, few things hold up longer term. And most surfaces are not perfect enough. Anybody use aviation permatex or Loctite 518 on metal gaskets(which the instruction say not to use). I've had such good luck with a sealer before on fiber but I don't know what happens with a metal gasket and sealer."
