Mericruiser

I have an mercruiser last year my forward worked in it for the first couple of days than all the sudden it quit and you can hear it trying to grab the gear but it wont but i can pop it in reverse and it works like a dream i need kind of hint where to start looking at or kind a hint whats wrong

I would start with removing the control cable from the mount on the Starboard riser and see if you can fully engage the lower unit into drive. You should do this while the engine is running on a remote water source. If you can engage the lower into the forward gear fully, it may just be a simple adjustment.

Dustin, get a manual, first off. then remove the cable going down the side of the exhaust manifold from the shift assist bracket on the starboard riser, not the one coming from the throttle/drive controls. then PUSH it in all the way while the motor is not running and rotate the prop by hand clockwise, then see if the prop is locked from turning counter clockwise. this will tell you if its a cable issue or a clutch dog issue. you dont say the year but im going to guess your going to need a new lower cable. pretty common with alpha's.

I appreciate the help guys. I'm pretty sure that it is the cable now I seen what you were talking about how you got to push it back and forth to see if the cable was bad. when I put it in reverse that the cable is pushing it forward but its not pushing it back at all when I put it in forward

replacing the cable requires removal of the gimble, if your comforatable with doing this job you need your replacement cable, bellows kit, while your there replace the gimble bearing, gonna guess that the cable is siezed in the housing which means drilling it out and retapping the gimble housing, thats a pipe thread tap, you still dont have a manual, i think that you may want to think about farming this one out. should be about 3-5 hrs labor and $300 parts to do it all.
