Hi can anybody help me find ou

Hi can anybody help me find out what motor i have the serial number is OB168948 or OB168940 the guy at the mercury dealer here was not that help full the engine vin is really hard to read is there another place to read the vin i am not sure if the engine cover is the original or not would like to get a manual and start tinkering with this any help would be great thanks cheers.
 
OB168 (which is enough to

OB168 (which is enough to ID the year) is a 1987. It should also be stamped on a round plug located on top of the motor.
