Your motor is NOT a Mercury regardless of what the hood says, it's a Force.

Be careful, a dealer may make the same mistake I did - because there is a 40 horse Mercury with the same serial range, but the parts are drastically different."

I have a 1982 Merc 40 hp Ser. # 6140815 that was running fine when I stored it away for the winter. When I put the water hose muff on the intake and cranked it over the motor started but no water came out of the "pee" hole so I immediately shut it off. Do I have a thermostat on the motor or would the pump impeller go bad that quick? I think I can get at the pump but should I get the whole assembly or just the impeller?

"Dale, change the water pump every 2 years. The housing every other time or so. It depends on how old the waterpump is but sitting without moving is the worst on them."

"Thanks for the info JB. Put in the new impeller & gaskets,(not a fun task) got it all back together. The place I got the parts from said that I should turn the prop and that little thing in front of the waterpump that raises the reverse lock to put it in reverse before I reassemble it. I did but now I can't get it out of reverse at the shifter. What did I do wrong and am I doomed to pull it all apart again?"

"when the lower unit is in neutral, position the cam so the pin is 1/2 way up the ramp when the lower bolts on to the engine mid section. The cam is sitting on the shift shaft splines and often falls off. You need to lift the cam up to put pliers on the shift shaft and turn it ccw to put the lower unit back in neutral. Now assemble it in neutral."
