Mercury troubles need advice

"I have a 1973 Mercury Mariner

"I have a 1973 Mercury Mariner Outboard 9.8 Thunderbolt Ignition motor. I hooked up new tank and new fuel lines, but the motor hasn't been started for about four years. You can prime the plugs and with a little starter fluid in the carborator it will fire, but only on full throttle and will only run for about thirty seconds and then quit. Please advise me as to what to do to make it run right."

"Your carb is clogged with old fuel gunk or you're not getting fuel. Remove and clean the carb, check for fuel flow after by removing the drain and pumping the bulb. Do not use starting fluid, no oil, spray some oil in the plug holes."
