Mercury Super Thunderbolt Value

Hi,

I just bought my first boat recently, oldie, 1970 Galaxy Trihull. It came from a retired auto dealer who was selling it for an ill friend. The boat had a spare motor thrown in with it and he wasn't able to tell me anything about it in terms of if is worked or not. I really don't have a need for a spare motor and I also have more than enough projects. I have done a little searching on the motor and think it should go to a good home. I have grown fond of it being vintage and all. So, my question is what would the value of this be and how should I go about getting it sold? Craigslist? Contact a local boating shop? Would it be worth getting it looked at to see if runs or what condition it is in? Thanks for any help.

If it's running or "capable of running" with minimal work the value will be significantly greater than if it's simply a few dozen pounds of "scrap aluminum".

There is a market for motors such as this. Those that restore old wooden boats or build wooden boats and want that vintage look would be interested.

Looking at it, it appears that it needs quite a bit of restoration to get it to "that stage" - all of that will figure into the value.

Back a few years ago one of the guys that belongs to the same boat building forum that I do picked up a "running" Mark 58 for $260 off an auction site. That may give you a bit of an idea of what they go for (but it is only one example).

As it sits, based on your pics and not knowing if it will run or not, I would be hard pressed to part with $100 for it. Yes, it's old and somewhat rare, but it's not like it's in it's original box - so no "collector value" in it's current state - for 100 bucks a dealer may use it as decoration...

Well, as an update I posted the motor on Craigslist and the interest came in pretty quickly. Sold the motor this morning to a guy for a $100 who is the right owner for it as he has numerous older boats and motors that evidently is a hobby. The part he was most interested in and was glad to see in fine shape was the cowl. Evidently is a pretty sought after item. Thing is since selling it this morning and before I could remove the post I got 3 more interests in it. So there is a fair demand in these motors. So glad to see it go to a good home.
