"Hi

I want to fit an electric starter motor to a Mercury 30hp 2 stroke new in 2003 (Tohatso re-brand).

Any info on how to install and where to obtain the starter motor, solenoid and switch (second hand or after market parts) would be appreciated."

"D, if it's 2 stroke then it is NOT a Tohatsu. They build Merc's 4 stroke line (in the smaller outboards).

The 2 stroke are Yamaha powerheads/gears with all else being "Merc".

Unfortunately, the only "cost effective" way to get electric start is to buy the motor that way when you get it new.

From the dealer an electric start model in this horsepower range is usually a couple hundred bucks extra. Changing it after the fact is much, much more (plus the labour unless you can do it yourself).

Merc has a "conversion kit" with everything you need. Merc part number 50-822462A4 retails for a touch over 500 bucks from any Merc dealer. Scrounging around for aftermarket parts could drop that price by 100 bucks, but this kit is definately an easy "everything you need" kit including instructions for all the various components.

Of course, you could continue to use the rope start and use the 500 bucks for gas
