Mercury shifting question 1971 110

Greetings,

Purchased a used Lowe 14 foot flat bottom with a "1971" Mercury 110. Seller said that the
outboard had run well, I've not had it in the water yet. The shift seems to have just two
positions - up and can be pulled forward one "notch". This is a manual start motor that appear very
clean. Were some of these made without reverse gear? Not really an issue, just want to know.

And thank you!

It has---- forward --nuetral ---reverse---- from the factory.----------------You must install a new waterpump impeller on a " new to you motor " especially one of those 110 models.----Throttle must be in the idle position to be able to shift it.-------Propeller MUST be turned if you are trying to shift to reverse on your motor stand !

Thanks for the tip on the waterpump impeller, nice. There are no markings on the motor housing for gear position any longer. The throttle is in the idle position. Is forward straight up or forward? Trying to figure where each gear is. Much appreciated!

Simply move the lever to put it in gear.----Then turn flywheel to see whether you have selected forward or reverse.--------The impeller on 9.8 HP --110 models should be replaced every 2 or 3 years.

That Merc has a dopey shift pattern that you have to learn and MARK to keep your sanity. Why they did that is a mystery to me.

Thank you for that Jeff,

Maybe it's not just me. I'm no outboard expert, but I've had a couple and this one seems different.
Marking is a good idea.

One more thing on those motors....They use a plastic (ugh!) shift shaft coupler with a blind spline so it goes together only one way--like hell! I've seen several that were jambed back together with the shifter shafts off a spline (which is possible since the dopey connector is plastic). When this happens, you loose forward or reverse.
