Mercury serial number location

"Hey all, I'm new to this forumn and to boating in general. I recently purchased a boat, a 1988 Chris Craft walkaround, and it came with a 1988 Mercury Black Max V-175 (are these any good...reliable, etc?). In order for me to register the motor, which is required in Rhode Island, I need to know the motor's serial number. Unfortunately, the sticker with this information (along with the model number) has come off. Is there an alternate location? I've heard that it may be on the block somewhere but I am not sure where exactly to look. Any help would be much appreciated!"
