Mercury Outboard Year?

I have a Mercury 9.8 hp outboard with a serial # of A177788 I would like to know the year and model. Thank you

The website maxrules has an excellent list of mercury serial #s by year. And to double check the 84/85 models have brown stripes

In mid 1985 Merc did a couple of things.

First off they scrapped production of the 7.5 and 9.8 horse outboards and started producing the "new for 1986", 6, 8 and 9.9 horse models which shared a powerhead.

Second, they went from an all numeric "serial number" and started the alpha numeric production numbers which started with a Zero, followed by a letter, then more numbers.

So the fact that you have a 9.8 horse with the new style (serial) number means that it "must" be a 1985 model and probably one of the last ones off the production line before they retooled to make the new models.
