Just bought a used RinkerBuilt boat from original owner. It has a 1982 80 horse Mercury Outboard. Everything worked fine when i left. After my two hour drive home with the boat the Outboard is stuck in the up position. When i try and tilt the motor down there is a sound but nothing happens. When i try and tilt the motor up there is absolutely no sound at all. Any ideas?

thanks in advance

For the noise and no going down, check whether the locks are engaged. I have an earlier 80 which has two L bracket type locks on either side of the power head that keep the motor up when trailering. If the locks aren't engaged then I would think the problem is hydraulic.
For the no up, it can be several things, solenoid, button or wiring.
I am actually just sorting through these issues with the 79 Princecraft I am rebuilding, I have had to replace one solenoid that was not working and still nothing would go up. In my case it is the button on the dash trim control which will be my next project.
The Clymer Mercury Outboard Shop Manual (72-89)is excellent and has all the test procedures to trouble shoot the issues that will come up
