"I'm trying to find out the model and year for a 35hp Mercury outboard. s/n seems to start with an 0 as far as I can make out, then it's M730282. Anyone have any ideas what it is or where I might find out.

"Ron, you don't have quite enough numbers there and depending on where the number is missing can make a significant difference.

The 35 Mercs were built for a while in the 60's then again from 1984 on.

If your serial starts 730... then it will be a Canadian built model (year really difficult to pin down).

Alternately, if it has an alphanumeric serial (post 86) it would be 0A.... etc (zero followed by either an A, B, C, D, G, P or T - only options)...

Or is this a "Mariner"? which could mean it's a Yamaha built model - distinctly different from the Mercs..."

"Hi Graham, thanks for the help. It's a Mercury alright, and I'm pretty sure it's from the mid to late eighties. I can't find any other numbers other than the one digit we can't read at the front of this one. I'm in Canada, so I'm assuming it is a Canadian model, but other than that everythings up in the air. I"m still waiting for a dealer to get back to me. Thanks for you help."

"There is a welsh plug (silver disk about the size of a quarter) on the waterjacket back near the sparkplugs (on the right hand side if you are behind the motor). Will post a pic below - the pic is a small Evinrude, but it's the same on the Mercs.

The serial is also stamped into that. Following the "zero" there will be a letter, the rest does look like a canadian serial. Just off the top of my head, would suspect about 1988, but it makes little difference as to the actual year, just need to figure out the series.

All 35's were identical between 84-89 as an example...
