Mercury Optimx Help

Thanks for looking/helping! I currently have a 2005 Optimax 115. I took the boat into the shop for annual service. The mechanic advised me that when he hooked the diagnostic tool up to the motor it would not read the ECM. He advised me that he wanted to put a spare ECM to see if the ECM was the problem. He advised that it would take 2-4 hours and doesnt know if that was the problem but I would still be charged labor hours at $80 an hour. I told him no. The motor runs fine. It starts fine and idols with no problems and runs great. A week or so later I tried to hook a smartcraft guage and it also would not detect the ECM as it read "nonE" Is the ECM the problem even though the motor runs great? Should I be looking somewhere else? I am lost and any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

The ECM service port must have a bad connection. It may have a corroded spot or cracked connection. You could leave it alone since the engine runs fine. If you have worked on circuit boards before you could also open the ECM on a bench and check the port for damage w/a magnifying glass and bright light...repair any board damage. Otherwise I would leave it alone.

Understand that in case of an emergency, like a engine problem during your vacation, no dealer can help you fast and accurate if they cannot connect CDS to the motor.

I agree with Guyig that there could be a connector problem, I feel it is important to check this. The blue and White color wires are the CAN 1 wires that will most probably give the problem, whese wires lead from the engine to the SC instrument.

I have yet to hook up my diagnostic connector to an Optimax and have it work without cleaning the plug on the engine. They all corrode here in Jersey. Lots of corrosion.

Run down to Radio Shack an buy a spray can of contact cleaner along with a small brush. Works for me most if the time. Then get a small tude of Diaelectric
grease and put in the conection after testing. The grease will help keep the contacts from getting dirty again.
Best of Luck, Oldman570
