Hi new on forum engine starts ok after 3-4 mins smart craft alarm comes on engineer put lap top on it said oil pressure sensor switch and thermostat replaced poppet. The alarm still comes on, the laptop gives me no new clues. After going into guardian mode, the engine has a slight serge and then cuts out. The only way to restart the engine is by pumping priming bulb again. Any ideas? Help!

You've got a couple codes there that are different. Oil pressure (never had one but sounds right) would be something but unrelated to thermostats. The primer bulb is another thing unrelated to the first two. What year is this engine? Do you have digital gauges (that give a text readout) or lights for various things?

Once the engine goes into guardian mode, whatever it's doing is the computer shutting you down. If it's overheat related, these engines are sensitive to any cooling system problems - they are setup to run without tolerance for any worn parts in the system. So for sure every year you replace water pumps on these, not like the old engines where you could go years. Every few years on an Opti you should be doing t-stats and poppet valve... but if your alarm isn't related to overheat then none of this is your current problem.

Hi Jon it's a 2009 year model the engineer says it runs cool and the tale tale is very strong . The smart craft is the digital type and was saying high water pressure this has been sorted now was getting water psi on smartcraft as high as 36 now it's 8 since popets valves and water and oil presure sensors done but alarm still comes on . The engine has done 52hrs from new we had 2 trips out and all fine then this problem has arose many thanks Jon

OK - so what is the alarm saying now? There should be some readout on the tach if you are getting an alarm.

OK - so when you said digital I assumed you had the gauges that actually display a message - other gauges have a screen and will tell you things like "IGNITION FAULT" - sounds like you've got a setup with just lights.

Based on that it's hard to say what is going on, I think you will need to have the codes pulled and make a decision to try to fix it yourself or let them do it. If you are in and out of a shop a lot they might do it for free but usually is $70 - $120, which is a small price to pay for having the right information in order to fix a problem.

You can have the shop just pull the codes and give you a printout, which is what some of do that work on our own Opti's (for instance even with something like "INJECTOR FAULT" you have no idea which of the 12 injectors trigger it, so you have the codes pulled and it tells you which cylinder/injector).
