MERCURY Instrumentation wire designations

I have a 1996 MERCURY ....200HP v6 2 stroke.....also I have a side mount control with trim and trailer button on the handle.....Nowhere can I find a way to identify the 5 wires intended for instrumentation.....( black, purple, brown/white, gray and tan )
I,m guessing but pretty sure the TAN is for the Tachometer....beyond that I have no clue
I know I can trace the schematic back on the engin, but i was hoping for an easier way....H E L P
