Mercury engine cuts with throttle

"I have a 1988 Mercury 90 HP motor. Just this year it has begun to act up.

It starts ok. It may take a few tries and some throttle to start it but other than that it starts. It idles fine and it runs fine when the engine is revved up, but the problems start when running it in gear.

Once we get into gear it is clear that the motor is not running well. Still we can find a "sweet spot" where it runs all right. When we increase the throttle and try to go fast it cuts out almost immediately. When it is running at higher speeds, it catches like it wants to go, but then it falls back into the same rut.

It decreases throttle on its own and cuts out. If we put it into neutral and slowly increase speed we can sometimes get it to go again without having to restart.

Earlier this year we had a broken fuel line that was fixed but nothing else.

I spoke to a local mechanic on the phone and got some advice. So far we have replaced the switchbox and trigger. Nothing has helped so far.

Does anyone know what may be happening?

I do not know a terrible lot about this so I apologize if it sounds confusing."

"Make a power run the best that you can, then shut it off and pull the plugs. Note the color of each and get back to us.

Not sure on this one but I kno

Not sure on this one but I know some of Mercury Mercruiser have an interlock switch that ties in to Shift cable to prevent shifting into reverse if your shift cable is sticking it could cause your to electrical switch kill the engine deliberately
