what years mercury/mariner control box will work for a 90 or 92 40hp?

Most of them will, with the exception of the ones made for SOME Merc 110/ 200 that shifted assbackwards. and, of couse, the old Dock Wreckers.

You will need a control box from the early 1980's on up. Those will have the correct plug in electrical connector.
