Good morning, I'm not brand new to outboards but new to mercury outboard, I'm working on a 2001 40hp 2stroke 2 cylinders 1 carb serial# 0G267165, the problem is spark under load has none or firing on downstroke or wrong time, at idle fine, replace plugs wires coil, witch was a task different dealers had different part numbers for coil so I phoned merc Canada and got told it should be #38- 827509A12 but dealer give me one with part # 8M0036695 cdm 11" and says that superseded but that is the style of one coil on this engine and it doesn't seem to be working on a load I pop cap off spark plug and doesn't make a difference in engine running bottom cyl, top cylinder has original coil #38- 827509A6 and when cap taken of it shuts the motor off, I'm starting to think it might be a timing issue any help would be appreciated thank you.
checked oms top coil 8 bottom coil 1.1, I switched coils top to bottom and issues follow coil but engine ran way worse to having trouble even at idle
i dont really want to dish out the 220$ for a coil if that's not the problem or if that 8m0036695 coil is not the right one for this motor
