mercury classic 50 not starting

i have a mercury classic 50 that started this spring, shut it off and will not start again has spark and gas cant figure out why it wont run please help if you have idea thanks

Can spark jump 7/16"?Check compression.If you have spark and fuel,it should at least try to start.
