Mercury alarm help

I recently bought my first boat last week. It has a 1997 40hp stroke mercury outboard ELO40. I took it out and at the end of the day the temperature alarm went off. The alarm was not constant and changed pitch and volume several times. I have since concluded it did not over heat because the alarm has stayed on even when the engine is cold. There is a long continuous beep when I turn the key. If I push the key in and choke the engine the alarm turns off sometimes. I thought it might be in the ignition so I replaced the ignition and key. All that I have accomplished is that they beep is louder and does not change pitch anymore but it is still on and Loud. I diss injected oil sensor and that did not turn off the alarm. If I tap the wires by the alarm speaker the alarm stops sometimes. I figured I had a frayed wire or bad ground but I have tested every wire and I have a good ground. As far as I can see there are not frayed wires and the bullet connectors look good. The remote is a quicksilver commander 2000. I am really stumped. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Disconnect the temp switch on the head at a junction when the engine is cold. If it stops wailing replace the temp switch. You can verify it is the switch w/an ohmmmeter. Test the disconnected wire to see if it is a dead short to ground. If it is shorted to ground that is the problem.
