"I recently bought a Mercury 9

"I recently bought a Mercury 9.9 hp from a friend he had no idea what year it was. I looked to match the serial with one listed on this site and did not find a match.

Serial: 0D215295

I was also looking for a place to clean it out (hook up a hose) and could not find one.

I am fairly new at boating and would appreciate any information. I attached a picture of it below, thanks!"

"Hi Jim,
that would be a 199

"Hi Jim,
that would be a 1993, you can find the full model number listing charts here -

From the same site you can also download a user manual by selecting Operation and Maintenance Manual from the dropdown menu. The manual is branded Mariner but the engine is the same.

The cooling water intake (I assume that is what you mean) is located on the bottom of the horizontal anti-ventilation plate above the prop.

Nice engine, I have just been getting into outboards myself by fixing up a 15 hp of the same year as yours, the two models are almost identical technically. Good luck!"

"Tom,

I can not thank you

"Tom,

I can not thank you enough. I appreciate your help. One other question I have is, how do you go about hooking up a hose and flushing your engine?

After I posted yesterday I found that intake under the plate. I have seen people flush with the ear muffs but it looks like I may need something different.

Thank you very much for your help!"

"set the leg in a trash can fu

"set the leg in a trash can full of water if you dont have muffs, water level about have way up the leg."

"Yep, that's the simplest

"Yep, that's the simplest way to do it. Just be sure to remove the prop.

(Apropos, when working on the propeller, disconnect the spark plug leads & make sure the kill switch is set to off - you don't want to accidentally crank and start the engine if you happen to rotate the prop/driveshafts by hand.)"

"for A guy like me with NO out

"for A guy like me with NO outboard experience I found the links to the manuals and such very very helpful. I didn't know you disconnect the plugs so it wou'nt start when working on them, SEE, it's stuff like this that when shared it so important, thank all of you for asking, answering, and taking the time to help others.

Spankey"
