Mercury 9.8

I have a 9.8 Mercury ser # 1989297. The spark plug listed, supposedly, is an NGK B9HS-10. When I install this plug, the piston hits the electrode thereby bending it till it touches the metal plug. So, I think the threaDs are too long but what other plug is available? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you ask for plugs for a 1966 9.8 model ( J7J ) or for plugs for a 9.8 model ???

It is a 1966 mercury 9.8 hp. Thats all it says anywhere.

No, but I did find plus to work on this year. They are an NGK BR6S. And I have another question. This motor has a KA Carburetor on it but the choke does not have a spring to hold the shutter in the closed position. I have looked all over for this diagram and parts #'s but cannot find anything. Any thots? And thanks for getting back to me.
