"Jim, if you are standing behind the motor, looking at the prop, the two plugs (screws) should be on the right hand side - one immediately below the cavitation plate and the second a few inches below that (after the swell of the gearcase).

I have one question though - your topic says 1977 8 horse - Merc only started building the 8 horse in 1986 - what exactly do you have? An 8 horse Mariner maybe??"

No Graham - it IS a 1987 8HP.

No Graham - it IS a 1987 8HP. M}y error on the typing skills. Do you reccommend any specific brand for gear oil for older engines ?
thanks so much for the help.

"87 old? My "newer" 9.9 is an 87

I own 3 motors from this series, an 86, 87 and a 91 - over 5000 hours use between the 3 of them.

For as long as I can remember I have been using a "Premium Marine Gear Oil" from a local auto parts chain (I think it sells for about 6 bucks a quart). Could spend double that on a "Merc" product, but have never seen the need. If you change it anually (like the book says) even a low quality oil would be fine in my opinion.

The store brand I use is simply a GL5 rated 90 weight marine gear oil - great stuff.

Either that or all my motors have "super gears"

"Sorry, should have added a diagram for ya. Number 3 is the vent plug and number 8 is the drain.

Wouldn't hurt to stop at a Merc dealer (or any ouboard dealer) and get a couple of rubber washers (seals) #4 and #9 - generic in size amongst most outboards, sell for about 50 cents a pair and keep the water and other cooties out of the lower unit through the plugs...
