Mercury 850 upper end cap bearing

OK I have a 1970's 850 Merc with a bad upper end cap bearing, dry to the bone! It has came apart and chewed up the cage. My question is...can I remove the upper end cap without splitting the case? And is it woth doing?because some of the metal could've gotten into the engine? Or do the 4 bolts hold the whole thing in place? I understand I will need to find out why the bearing stop getting lubricated.

You can remove the upper cap without splitting the block !----------------But in this case there really is no point in doing that.-----------------------There likely is more damage ( labarybth sealing areas ) done inside. I believe the bearing is a press fit on the crank as well so--------------------TAKE THIS THING APART.-----------No short cuts on this job.
