mercury 80 redband transmission problem

i have a mercury 80 redband outboard that was on a fletcher speedboat i tok it appart to get the driveshaft housing repaired as it was cracked i put all back together and she runs fine but wen put in reverse it just goes forward aswell maybe i build something up wrong kind of new to boats any help would be appreciated

Drop the lower unit again. Grab the shift shaft with a vice grips ,turn it clockwwise until you find three clicks close together.The middle one is neutral,prop spins in both directions,clockwise is forward,prop locks in one direction and ratchets in the other, and anti clockwise is reverse,prop locks in both directions.
Put lower unit and control box in same gear and all should be well
