"I have been reading alot of the old posts looking for a answer, didnt find one so I will start a new one. My Mercury has been sitting for 3 or 4 years, I am in the process of getting parts so I can get it running. The question is: Should I somehow, get some oil in the motor before I start turning it over alot? I have been spraying fogger into the cylinders, should there be something else I should be doing?"

"Will,

It is a good idea to remove the carbs and open them up. Make sure all orifices and jets are clear. With the carbs off you should inspect the reeds and spray some oil in there while turning the flywheel clockwise. Do this every day for a few days. You want to be sure that the crankshaft and bearings are well oiled before you crank the engine. I usually soak the pistons with engine tuner just in case there is some carbon that might cause some sticking in the ring grooves.

"Ok,I admit it.I'm a newby. Here is my problem.I'm installing a (1972)Mercury 50 horse short shaft motor on a 15 ft.low profile runabout.I have the original controls and it's all hooked up right.(I think).I bought a new battery(marine- not deep cycle),put gas mix in the tank, hook up the water, turn the key and-it barely turned over. It's like the battery is almost dead(it's fully charged). That was day 1/on day 2 it olny clicks.I even tried to jump it with my car-nothing.Can anyone help.thanks Mike"

did you charge the battery or

did you charge the battery or was it like that from the store? Also you could have a sticky solenoid on the starter motor after you have charged the battery or tested it get some one to tap a spanner on the starter motor as you try to turn it over. also check all wiring from battery to starter and earths are clean tight and in good repair.
