Mercury 7.5 hp running hot.

Hi,
I have a 1978 7.5 hp mercury it starts and runs fine, there is good pressure of water out of the tell tail but the water feels very hot to the touch.
As I am not familiar with this type of motor would this be the normal ?
It just feels very hot to me and I am afraid to run it for to long.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When was the impeller last changed?

Run it in a barrel with saltaway for 1/2 hour or so while monitoring the engine temp. You should be able to hold your hand on the head for a slow count to six?

I would say it's been a while, when I took it apart the impeller looked ok, but I have ordered a new water pump kit, just to rule out the water pump .
There was a good flow of water but it seemed very hot.

Hi. Does it have thermostat? If yes,then it can be stuck closed and water is not making full circle.

Hi, there is no thermostat on this model hopefully the new water pump will sort it out.

Get a jug of saltaway and run it at least 1/2 hour in a barrel six inches above the top of the prop. If the exhaust cover gets hot you may need to pull the powerhead and clean out the water circuits?
