I have recently bought a 1961

I have recently bought a 1961 6hp Merc 60 twin cylinder outboard motor. There is no water coming from the exhaust under the cowling and I suspect the impeller or water pump needs replacing. I attempted to take the lower unit off but don't know how to undo the shift lever shaft. Is it undone at the engine compartment or down in the lower lef area. Looks pretty complicated and hard to get at in the engine compartment. Also where does the anode (if any) attach to?

"Maybe someone can jump in her

"Maybe someone can jump in here that knows for sure... I don't have manuals for anything prior to 65, but assume the models didn't change much.

Try looking "under" the powerhead, behind the carb (basically where the shift-shaft comes up inside the lower cowl).

What I suspect you are looking for is a cam with a pin going through it, which holds the shift-shaft.

If you are standing in front of the engine, access will be on "your" right side. Things are pretty tight under there, but usually you can just see what you are after, then feel your way in...."
