Mercury 50hp stuck carb floats

OK. I rebuilt 2 out of the 3 c

OK. I rebuilt 2 out of the 3 carbs that are on the 50hp because the floats on 2 were sticking. Worked fine all duck season.Now I tried to fire it up before going Rock Fishing and what do ya know the same thing again! Take them apart and free the floats up and it runs again! Why do the floats keep sticking??????Ia this the routine that I'm gonna have to do everytine the motor sits for any length of time? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
 
If you are going to lay the mo

If you are going to lay the motor up more than a couple of weeks you may want to pull the carbs off and empty them out completely (of gas).

Suspect that the gas remaining in the bowl is gumming up the floats when it evaporates while sitting...
 
When you are at the dock pull

When you are at the dock pull the fuel line off and run the carburetors empty.Fool proof way to ensure that carburetors are ready to go the next time you go out.

Thanks Guys. But I do pull the fuel line off and run it out of gas till it stalls and doesn't restart. Seems like pulling the carbs off and draining them is an awful lot of trouble to go through each time? Perhaps it's the ethanol in the gas these days? But I use Stabilzer in all my gas containers now a days. Seems like you shouldn't have go to drastic measures every time you shut the motor off between trips? Any one else experience these problems before?????

Well if carburetors are run empty the float will fall down and open the float valve ---- so how can they be stuck when you try to prime the carburetors on start up?? Your primer bulb is in good shape yes ???

was there not a float change due to ethenol fuels? he never said what year 50hp and if the floats have ever been changed.
 
the 50 hp is a 2001 with hardl

the 50 hp is a 2001 with hardly any hours on it and yes the primer bulb is ok. I haven't changed the floats out. Unless they are cracked and are filling up with gas they seldom go bad. I'm not aware of any changing the floats for ethanol? I changed out the gas from the tank and it seems that there's a slight film of oily water in with the gas when I dumped the carbs out? I can't be sure? DOes any one recommend a type of filtration in-line or other wise to combat the condensation/water building up in the tank? Keep in mind there's a limited space on the back of the transom. It's only a 17ft XPRESS aluminum side consol.
