MERCURY 50HP REDBAND will only select reverse when engine tilted??

Any help would be appreciated.

Will select reverse when engine slightly lifted but not always when down.

I was going to check the condition of the gear oil but can not see a drain/fill hole only the vent plug?

The drain plug should be easy to find.-----Look for it.

Yes the linkage can be adjusted and the drain plug is under the torpedo shaped bit of the lower unit
